As a royal temple, Prambanan is located on a large area, about 39,8 hectare. The area of Prambanan temple is divided into three yards, each yard is separated by fences and completed with gates in the four direction of the wind.

The main temples consist of Brahma temple in the southern part, Civa temple in the middle and Visnu temple in the northern part. On the wall of Brahma and Civa temples, there are Ramayana relief, whereas on the wall of Visnu temple, there is a Kresnayana relief.

Siwagrha is an epigraph which is assumed to have a close relation with Prambanan, gave detailed descriptions of a group of temples which was legitimated by Rakai Pikatan in 778 saka or 856 as a symbol of his victory in a battle against Balaputradewa which happened in Boko hill. Based on this epigraph, it seems that Prambanan temple was built as an awakening symbol of ancient Mataram kingdom which has ever experienced unstable condition such as war and the changing of capital city for three times.
