It started with the changing status of Mount Merapi into red alert in 2006 and the eruption happened on June 14, 2006 which destroyed Kaliadem, one of tourism sites in Jogjakarta. Kaliadem is located in Kepuharjo, Cangkringan, Sleman, the northern part of jogjakarta. It collapsed the economic condition of Kaliadem people and also the people around Merapi especially Kepuharjo and Umbulharjo people. Cangkringan district were officially closed by the government because it was considered as a dangerous site. Since then, the people there needed to evacuate themselves in some shelters provided by the government.
After some months when Merapi condition was stable and safe to visit, many people either local or foreigner wanted to see the post eruption which has ever destroyed this site.
The Karang Taruna (youngsters) of those two villages helped by the official department of Sleman formed an organization to help the people there and also the tourists who visited Kaliadem. Since that time Kaliadem becomes a unique tourism place and changed its name into “ Merapi Lava Tour”.
After having some meetings involving many sides, Merapi Lava tour was officially open by Karang Taruna Karya Remaja Kali Adem Kepuharjo and Karang Taruna Pelem Sari under the official department approval on July 15, 2006.
